He died on 8 July 1944 in France - Private 5773088, 7th Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission grave registration entry for Lionel was ^ldquo;SYZLING, Pte. LIONEL FREDERICK, 5773088. 7th Bn. The Royal Norfolk Regt. 8th July 1944. Age 23. Son of Fredrick James Syzling and Ethel Maud Syzling; husband of Ethel Daisy Syzling, of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.” Lionel is commemorated at Cambes-En-Plaine War Cemetery - Row J. 16.

Newspaper:	Diss Express and Norfolk and Suffolk Journal, 4 Aug 1944 LOPHAM, NORTH KILLED IN ACTION Much sympathy was expressed to Mr. and Mrs. F Syzling when it became known that their only son, Pte. Lionel Frederick Syzling had been killed in action in France. Joining the Army at the outbreak of war, he had previously served with the Paratroups in North Africa. Of a genial disposition he was a popular boy in the village. As recently as last March he married Miss Daisy (Bubbles) Hardwick, of Legsby, Lincolnshire.
